Three games in one was more than the 52,000 fans at San Diego’s
Jack Murphy Stadium paid for, but three games is what they
saw as the Brigham Young Cougars held on to defeat Washington
State, 38-36. The BYU squad won the first game, a 31-minute
affair that generated a 31-7 lead. The next 25 minutes just
as convincingly belonged to WSU, 29-7. In the end, however,
the game belonged to BYU as much for defense as anything.
BYU stopped WSU with just over three minutes to play by forcing
a punt, then ran out the clock to preserve the win.
